The 2024 Election is sure to raise a lot of conversations in class, and while the Federal races might dominate the media, the State races provide an opportunity for issue focused conversation.

Teach with TVW offers election curricula and videos to understand the nine statewide elected offices, the candidates running for them, the role of political parties, and Washington’s Top Two Primary system in order to be an effective voter – All this delivered in short explainer videos, supported by concise lesson plans.


3 STEPS TO INFORMED VOTING


STEP 1 – Learn About Elections

Teach with TVW follows the state political conventions during the 2024 election cycle, breaking down the role of political parties, endorsements, forums, redistricting, precinct committee officers, the Top Two Primary, and how to cast an informed vote. Students will gain an understanding of how citizens engage and help shape the choices for voters on the ballot.

Essential Questions:

  • To what extent do elections represent the will of the electorate?
  • How does learning about the electoral process contribute to one’s advocacy?
  • To what extent are political parties representative of the people?

STEP 2 – Learn About the Job and the Candidates

On The Issues presents the Video Voters’ Guide featuring four of the statewide positions for: Governor, Attorney General, Commissioner of Public Lands, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. Students will consider what issues are important to them and who of these candidates echo their own concerns. Students will research and submit their questions to get answers in a live Q&A with each of the candidates in order to get a better understanding of where candidates stand on the issues.


Essential Questions:

  • Understand the role of the electeds in Washington State
  • Understand the issues raised in the 2024 Election
  • Participate in media coverage of the election

All 4 of the final candidate/student Q&As will be posted in time for use by classes prior to casting their votes in the Secretary of State Mock Election.

Important dates:

  • September 1st – Video Voters’ Guide packet posted.
  • October 14 – 18th Student question submission and selection.
  • October 25th Candidates answers posted.
