What are the roles and responsibilities of Washington’s Superintendent of Public Instruction? Learn about this statewide elected office with former WA State Superintendent Randy Dorn.

By focusing on how the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) works with the state’s public school districts and 6 state-tribal education compact schools, students will understand how the office funds the public school system for the betterment of all Washingtonians.

  • To what extent does OSPI have control over local schools?
  • How are public schools funded?

Objectives:

  1. Understand the role and responsibilities of the Superintendent of Public Instruction
  2. Explain how education is the paramount duty of the state
  3. Discern the importance of local levies for school funding
Grade Level Standards:
  • Middle School: 6th – 8th
    • C2.6-8. 2 Distinguish the structure, organization, powers, and limits of government at the local, state, and tribal levels.
    • C4.6-8.3 Employ strategies for civic involvement that ad­dress a state or local issue.
  • High School: 9th – 12th
